Bridge No.1a & 2 Lady Bay
Very shortly after Trent Lock, the canal swings round to the Trent Bridge relief road. Note the small difference between water level and road level.
Trent Bridge was a notorious bottle neck for many years, but a relief road was built over the old railway line which used to cross over the canal at this point, utilising the railway river crossing bridge.
The access road to Nottingham Forest Football Ground and the Environment Agency was also built across the canal with the construction of the relief road.
Oi, will someone move the road!!! Standing on the line of the canal, looking towards Lady Bay. A complex road junction now exists on the old Lady Bay Bridge. The arrow shows where the canal now emerges.
The other side of the culvert, a haven for litter, dog mess and supermarket trolleys!!!
This section is likely not to be reused when navigation is restored, due to road level being so close to canal level. Lowering the level of the canal at this point means that the level of the canal would be very close to the River Trent, therefore the possibility of flooding would pose a serious threat to homes close by
An alternative route therefore, known as the "Trent Link" has been surveyed to link up with the Trent at either Adboulton or Holme Pierrepont. The latter would use the course of the Polser Brook.
